Forklift training consists of two portions--a classroom segment with videos, text and verbal instructions; and hands-on training by a qualified forklift operator. These segments combined complete the forklift operator certification process.

  1. Checklist

    • The operator being trained will complete the pre-shift checklist under the observation of the trainer. The trainer will ensure the trainee knows what elements to check and how they are to be checked to be certain all are in working order.

    Initial Startup

    • The trainee will check all controls and start the forklift. He will be observed to make certain he is familiar with the controls, wears his seat belt, and is observant of his surroundings, other machines and pedestrians in the area.

    Travel

    • The operator will maneuver the forklift within a designated area, where he may be observed making turns, accelerating, stopping, and properly sounding the horn. During this segment, the travel speed and cornering are the key elements of the test.

    Load Handling

    • The trainer will have the operator approach and lift a designated load. She will then travel with this load and place it in a storage rack or other designated location. Areas of concern are the height at which the load is carried, having a clear line of sight, and approaching the destination carefully and with the machine under complete control.

    Truck Loading/Unloading

    • The operator will load or unload a truck or trailer. The operator must check to be certain the wheels are chocked, the dock plate is secure, and the trailer floor will support the weight of the cargo and well as the forklift.

    Final Evaluation

    • Depending on the facility, the operator may be required to operate the machine on a ramp or incline and will also be required to refuel or place the machine on the charger if operating an electric lift. The trainer will then grade the operator in each of these areas and determine whether the operator is to be certified.
