Seizures in Pug Puppies

Causes
-
As a puppy, a Pug can be a curious little dog who gets into things he shouldn’t, such as toxins or certain foods, which can cause seizures. Additional causes can include epilepsy or Pug dog encephalitis.
Symptoms
-
A Pug puppy may display many symptoms during a seizure. Symptoms may include changes in behavior, muscle spasms, vomiting, loss of consciousness, excessive salivation, involuntary loss of control over bowel movements and confusion.

Diagnosis
-
Following a puppy’s first seizure, the veterinarian will perform a physical examination and inquire about recent medical history. He may run several tests such as X-rays and blood tests to determine what the the underlying cause of the seizure.
Treatment
-
Treatment will depend on the cause of seizures. If the seizure is due to a food or toxin, then the puppy may not require any lifelong treatment, whereas if the cause is epilepsy, the dog may require medications for the rest of its life.
Prognosis
-
Fortunately, even with certain diseases like epilepsy, a Pug puppy can continue to live a long, happy and relatively healthy life. However, if the seizures occurred because the puppy ingested a large amount of a toxin, such as antifreeze, the prognosis may be more guarded.
