The day care industry is expected to grow 15 percent through 2018.

Between 2008 and 2018, the U.S. Bureau of Labor projects, the day care industry to grow 15 percent. This change is due to the increasing number of parents who work outside the home work, as well as families' desires to provide their children with formal education at a younger age.

  1. Industry Structure

    • Day care businesses can be large centers with more than 50 employees or small homes with just a few children. Day care services are provided at independent businesses, religious facilities, social and recreation centers, colleges and office complexes.

    Services Provided

    • Child care services usually benefit infants and children up to 5 years old, providing them each with age-appropriate education, community, activities, outdoor play and daily snacks or meals.

    Wages and Hours

    • According to the Bureau of Labor, self-employed providers work more hours than their counterparts. A typical day can last up to 12 hours. In 2008, hourly earnings for day care providers averaged at $11.32. Non-profit and religious-affiliated centers usually pay more than for-profit businesses.

    Environment

    • Working at a day care requires physical agility to be able to stand, walk, bend and lift things through the day. Many day care workers become stressed at the low pay in relation to the job conditions and responsibilities and choose to leave.
