Back Surgery on Dogs

Back Surgery on Dogs thumbnail
A herniated disc can necessitate surgery on a dog's back.

Just like humans, dogs can develop back trouble. When conservative treatments like physical therapy or pain management fail to help, back surgery may be necessary.

  1. Reason for Surgery

    • A dog will need back surgery if he experiences a problem with an intervertebral disc. A herniated disc can put pressure on the dog's spinal cord, causing paralysis or mobility issues, according to the "Pocket Companion to Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine."

    Surgery

    • During surgery, the dog will be given general anesthesia. The veterinary surgeon makes an incision in the dog's back and will remove portions of a damaged disc and possible small sections of the surrounding vertebrae.

    Complications

    • Potential complications of back surgery on dogs include adverse reactions to anesthetic, paralysis and infection of the spine or bladder.

    Aftercare

    • After back surgery, a dog needs to be confined as it heals. The owner should monitor the surgical incision and look for signs of poor healing or infection.

    Considerations

    • It is normal for a dog to have worse symptoms of spinal trouble after surgery than before. As it heals from back surgery, the symptoms should get much better.
