What Is Eco-Friendly Packaging?
Materials used for packaging of products make up a large percentage of the total waste a country produces each year. Minimizing this waste production reduces strain on the environment and helps everyone.
-
Problem
-
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, packaging makes up nearly a third of non-industrial solid waste in some countries. As countries grow, the amount of packaging waste increases.
Solution
-
Many countries have laws that regulate the use of packaging and encourage reducing, reusing and recycling packaging materials. The United States does not have a federal regulation on packaging, but some local governments have policies or guidelines.
-
Definition
-
Eco-friendly packaging includes products made from recycled, biodegradable or reusable materials. Using eco-friendly packaging is more sustainable and reduces waste production.
Examples
-
Reusable shopping bags, biodegradable boxes and shipping supplies, and glass or metal water bottles are just a few examples of eco-friendly packaging.
Tips
-
According to the University of Texas Environmental Health and Safety Department, there are many ways to make a difference. Some of these include buying products in bulk, storing food items in reusable containers, washing and reusing plastic bags and aluminum foil, and refilling a glass or metal bottle of water instead of buying prepackaged plastic bottles.
