The Chandelier Height to Table

The Chandelier Height to Table thumbnail
Chandeliers are large light fixutres with mulitple lights.

Chandeliers are an ideal addition to dining rooms and kitchen nooks, but they can be tricky to hang. Learning the proper height to hang your chandelier ensures that the fixture will fit the space correctly. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ceiling Height

    • Chandeliers hanging from an 8-foot ceiling should be 30 inches above the table. If the ceiling is higher than 8 feet, the chandelier should hang 32 inches from the table's top. This method is standard and can apply to all chandelier types.

    Diaphanous Fixtures

    • Traditional and contemporary chandeliers with a see-through skeleton, with multiple arms, can hang lower at 28 to 32 inches above the table because their openness creates the illusion of space.

    Solid Fixtures

    • Solid, bowl-like chandeliers can hang slightly higher because their solid shape is bulky. Consider hanging bowl-like chandeliers at 34 to 36 inches above the table and make adjustments to height depending upon the ceiling's height.

    Chandelier Height

    • The chandelier's height should be approximately 3 inches high per foot of ceiling height, or 24 inches for an 8-foot ceiling and half the diameter of the dining table in width to fit properly into the space.

    Chandelier Hardware

    • The simplest chandeliers to adjust are those that hang from the ceiling by a chain. Chains can be adjusted and links can be removed to allow the chandelier to hang properly.
