There are many myths floating around about where the game of tetherball originated. Many have thought that the game was created by Nigel Tether of Ball, England. But there is nothing substantial to back up this claim. Another myth is that the game originated in Canada; but again, no substantial evidence to support this.
Possible May Day Connection

The activities of dancing around the maypole on May Day and the game of tetherball have very similar principles. This is probably the reason why many believe tetherball has its roots with the maypole. May Day has a rich Pagan history since it is an important holiday for the Druids. The maypole is a vertical pole secured in the ground that is decorated with long strands of ribbon that hang down. Several people hold each strand of ribbon and either walk or dance around, winding the ribbons around the pole.

Known History

What is known about the game is that it was more than likely created after volleyball was invented in 1895. Volleyballs were the first balls to be used in tetherball and later, special balls for the game were created.

Because the game of tetherball is not officially recognized as a sport in the United States, there are no records regarding its history and the like. As of 2010, there are no tetherball associations, leagues or organizations. Still, the game lives on in playgrounds and daycamps across the nation.
Rules of the Game

The main object of the game is to wrap the ball around the ball before your opponent does. Each player stands on opposite sides of the pole and one player serves the ball. The one who serves the ball has the choice of what direction the ball will travel in. The other player will hit the ball in the opposite direction. Both players are not allowed to catch the ball and throw it or touch the rope in any way. Both players must use an open hand or fist to move the ball around the pole.
