Husky Allergies

Husky Allergies thumbnail
Huskies can cause allergic reactions in humans.

Huskies were first bred in Siberia to act as sled dogs for the Chuckchi people. They are beloved family dogs with a friendly presence and a love of company. Unfortunately, some people can be allergic to the husky.

  1. Prevalence

    • About 15 percent of the American population suffers from dog allergies, states the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. These allergies range from very mild to severe and can occur with any breed of dog, including huskies.

    Causes

    • Most husky allergies are due to dander, which is the dead skin dogs shed consistently. The saliva and urine may also cause allergic reactions.

    Shedding

    • Huskies shed a large amount twice during the year. Though hair is not a strong source of human allergies, huskies will still cause problems for those with moderate and severe dander allergies, states the Southern Siberian Rescue.

    Symptoms

    • Several common symptoms of a husky allergy include itchy eyes, a runny nose and a rash, according to experts at Pet Education.

    Treatment

    • Since getting rid of your pet husky is usually not realistic, allowing your husky in only specific areas of the house may help to ease allergies when you are in the other rooms. Allergy medication can also be an effective treatment for those with moderate allergies.
