U.S. Navy Code of Conduct

In the Navy, sailors swear to adhere to the code of conduct.

In the U.S. Navy, each organization has its own specific code of conduct. For example, the Navy Officer Candidate School requires students to follow the code if they want to graduate.

Purpose

The Navy OCS Code of Conduct provides some basic guideline for the appropriate actions of officers. It also emphasizes the importance of integrity and loyalty to candidates.

Features

The Code of Conduct has six rules. Rules one, two and six emphasize that each officer is an American and that their duty is to protect the country and its citizens. Rules three, four and five cover prisoner of war situations and state that officers should not give enemies any information or sign statements denouncing the U.S.

Identification

The OCS Code of Conduct must be memorized by candidates upon their arrival. Drill instructors will constantly quiz candidates on this information for the first few weeks of training.

Considerations

The OCS Code of Conduct is specific to officer candidates and officers. Enlisted and warrant officer personnel have their own codes of conduct that they learn when they go through training.

Significance

The OCS Code of Conduct's focus on duty, loyalty and honor will help officers even after they leave the Navy. Employers are always looking for workers who embody these values.
