The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is required by many states to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) appointed the Pearson VUE to deliver of the examination, and the Professional Examination Service (PES) created the test.

  1. Significance

    • The PTCE is mandatory for an individual to hold the CPhT title. Prior to registering for the test, pharmacy technician students must contact the PTCB and request approval to sign up for the test. After the PTCB approves the request, the candidate is allowed to register for the exam. By completing the exam and registering with the state as a certified technician, individuals are prepared to effectively work with pharmacists to serve patients.

    Features

    • The CPhT exam, which is two hours long, consists of 90 multiple-choice questions. Candidates complete the computer-based test at a Pearson VUE testing location.

    Content

    • Candidates are requested to provide their knowledge in three areas relevance to the job duties of a pharmacy technician, such as assisting the pharmacist in serving patients, pharmacy practices and medication inventory.

    Cost

    • As of July 2010, applicants pay $129 to Pearson VUE to take the exam.

    History

    • The PCTB created the certification exam in 1995. Prior to its existence, no national examination was required to become a CPhT.
