Housing specialists are responsible for assisting families and youth with finding affordable housing. They are also responsible for resolving landlord and tenant issues and taking care of the inspection process.

The duties to be performed as a housing specialist include interviewing applicants and determining if they’re eligible for low-income housing, maintaining and updating tenant information, reviewing and analyzing financial information and computing housing assistant payments.
Qualifications and Training

A bachelor’s degree in social work, sociology, psychology or guidance is preferred. Employers typically prefer two years of experience in subsidized housing or a related field. A high school diploma is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required as well as interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with customers and fellow employees.

The salary of a housing specialist can range between $20,000 and $40,000. Salaries normally depend on the size of the company or organization, the industry, educational experience and professional experience.
Physical Demands

A housing specialist must meet a few physical demands such as sitting for long periods of time, standing, stooping, bending, physically flexing, operating equipment and lifting up to 20 pounds.
