With the right software, you can bring new life to your old photos.

There are a variety of software programs that make it easy to repair your photos. The programs range from novice to professional level and allow you to do the same photo restoration work on your computer that a photo lab does.

  1. Windows Live Photo Gallery

    • Microsoft offers Windows Live Photo Gallery as a free download for Windows XP and later. Windows Live Photo Gallery includes some basic photo repair tools such as auto adjustment and allows you to manually adjust color, exposure settings and more.

    iPhoto

    • Apple’s iPhoto comes preinstalled as part of the iLife suite on all new Macintosh computers. The current version as of July 2010, iPhoto ’09, offers color adjustments, red-eye fix and photo cropping.

    Gimp

    • Gimp is free photo editing program that offers more than just basic photo repair and image manipulation features. Gimp offers features comparable to Adobe Photoshop such as a cloning tool and the ability to work in different color channels.

    Adobe Photoshop

    • Adobe sells various versions of Photoshop to suit different users’ needs. Adobe Photoshop Essentials offers a lower cost and streamlined interface designed for novices. The CS versions of Photoshop are designed for professional photo editors who need advanced photo editing capability.

    Corel PaintShop Photo Pro

    • Corel PaintShop Photo Pro is a popular alternative to Photoshop because it offers similar advanced photo editing features at a lower price. Corel also offers PaintShop Photo Express, which is a scaled down version of the program geared towards new users.
