Miniature-Poodle Standards

Miniature poodles must meet height standards.

The miniature poodle is one of three sizes of the breed that the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes. Other than specific height requirements, the AKC breed standard for standard, miniature and toy poodles is the same.

  1. Height

    • Miniature poodles must measure over 10 inches but under 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders, according to the AKC. A standard poodle can measure over 15 inches, while a toy poodle's height must be 10 inches or under.

    Overall Appearance

    • The AKC says miniature poodles must be active, alert, well groomed and "squarely built." The ideal poodle possesses an "air of distinction and dignity," according to the breed standard.

    Colors and Coat

    • Miniature poodles must be solid-colored. Those colors can include black, white, apricot or gray, according to the AKC. The coat can be curly or corded.

    Proportion

    • The miniature poodle's measurements from the breastbone to the end of the rump should mirror the dog's height from the highest point of the shoulders to the ground, per the AKC.

    Other Factors

    • The breed standard also calls for dark, oval-shaped eyes and a long, straight muzzle. The miniature poodle's neck must also be long and strong enough to allow the dog to carry its head high.
