What Do Vet Techs Wear on the Job?
Vet techs assist veterinarians in the everyday medical care of animal patients. They perform a number of duties and deal directly with the animals in their care. The standard uniform for vet techs is comfortable, durable and modest.

Identification
-
Veterinary technicians wear clothing called scrubs--simple clothing, usually cotton or a cotton blend, consisting of pants and a shirt or a gown. They come in many colors, prints, cuts and styles.
Function
-
Scrubs are designed so that vet techs can move easily and deal with their animal patients without worry of exposing parts of their body or ruining their street clothing.
-
Features
-
Most scrub outfits worn by vet techs don't use metal fasteners--a benefit because claws catch easily on snaps and buttons. This also is a benefit if the vet tech works with radiology equipment and in the surgical suite, where complicated fasteners can pick up and harbor potentially dangerous bacteria. Scrubs are designed to minimize places for dirt and microorganisms to hide, making them easy to clean and sanitize.
Considerations
-
Every veterinary practice differs in dress code. While almost all vet techs wear scrubs, some employers may restrict their uniform to certain colors or prohibit wild prints. Informal clinics may allow any scrub type, as long as the vet tech follows the modesty policy of "no crack, front or back," as noted by veterinarian Dr. David Wright.
Other Components
-
In addition to scrubs, vet techs must wear comfortable, durable, slip-resistant shoes. Jewelry and watches are considered a safety hazard for vet techs. Hair, if long, must be pulled back to prevent injury. Vet techs working with large animals may have to wear boots or overalls when working in a barn or field. Personal protective equipment, such as safety goggles or a lead vest, may be required in areas where dangerous chemicals or radiation are used.
