Training Needed to Become a Paramedic

A paramedic is a trained medical professional who administers medical care to patients in emergency situations, usually as they're being transported to a hospital. A paramedic's decisions and response times can often mean the difference between life and death for someone facing a life-threatening medical emergency.

Those wishing to become a paramedic must meet several training requirements.

  1. EMT Training

    • The length and type of EMT training required for a paramedic vary from state to state, but anyone wanting to become a paramedic must enroll in an EMT training course to learn crucial skills for responding to emergency medical situations. These courses are typically offered at local community colleges, medical centers and non-profit organizations.

    On-the-Job Training

    • No training can replace actual on-the-job experience when it comes to understanding how to handle yourself properly during an emergency. Those who want to become paramedics should consider volunteering for local ambulance companies to get experience with as many aspects of the paramedic experience as possible.

    Education

    • Paramedics should have a high school diploma or GED before enrolling in an EMT training program. After finishing EMT training, students desiring to become licensed paramedics must also complete more advanced courses in anatomy, physiology and advanced medical skills. This is often done at the college level and may eventually lead to an associate's degree.

    Other Requirements

    • Paramedics should be in good physical condition, have good eyesight and the ability to lift fairly heavy loads. They should also be patient, work well under pressure and be emotionally stable.

    Consult with Professionals

    • People who desire a career as a paramedic might wish to discuss the highs and lows with experienced paramedics and EMTs.
