Facts about the Sphynx Cat

Facts about the Sphynx Cat thumbnail
Lack of fur is the sphynx cat's most striking feature.

The sphynx or Canadian hairless cat is a rare and unusual breed, most known for its apparently hairless body. Though the breed's name and appearance may conjure up images of ancient Egypt, the sphynx cat is a thoroughly modern breed.

  1. Appearance

    • Sphynx cats are medium to large cats with distinctive large eyes and ears. Though sphynx cats appear hairless, their skin pigment may come in a variety of colors and patterns.

    History

    • Hairless cats have appeared naturally throughout history as a mutation. The origins of the sphynx cat as a breed can be traced back to such a mutation in 1966 in Canada, when a breeding program was organized. The current sphynx bloodline began later, in 1975 in Minnesota.

    Temperament

    • Sphynx cats are intelligent, energetic cats that actively seek attention from humans. These cats are inquisitive and easily handled and are generally excellent around other pets, including dogs.

    Health

    • Due to conscientious breeding practices, the sphynx cat is a healthy breed that suffers from few genetic problems. Sphynx cats require regular bathing and grooming to remove excess oils that might accumulate on their skin.

    Misconceptions

    • Despite its reputation as a hairless breed, many sphynx cats are actually covered in a fine down, and some may have light hair on their feet, nose and tail.
