Can Epoxy Floor Paint Be Used on Plywood?

Although latex and acrylic latex paints are generally preferred for coating plywood, epoxy floor paint can be used, provided the applicator employs the proper preparation and application strategies. Improper techniques will ultimately lead to paint failure.

Epoxy floor paint is a two-part coating, consisting of a colored resin and a catalyst. When mixed together, the two components harden into a glossy, durable finish.

Plywood is often coated with unseen sawdust that can inhibit adhesion. Exterior plywood should be washed with a pressure washer, while interior plywood should be cleaned with a tackcloth.

No type of paint will adhere to bare plywood. A coat of latex primer is required before painting.

Applicators can coat larger pieces of plywood, using a roller. A paintbrush, manufactured specifically for use with water-based paints, is appropriate for applying epoxy to smaller pieces of plywood.

Once the catalyst and resin are combined, epoxy will begin to harden. Applicators generally have no more than two hours to complete the application process before the mixture becomes too hard to work with.
