The Cost to Start Up a Day Care

The Cost to Start Up a Day Care thumbnail
Day cares are popular small businesses in the United States.

Day cares are popular small businesses because you can operate one from home with little cost. Depending on the size of your day care, the start-up cost will fluctuate, but there are some necessary items to include in your initial budget.

  1. Rent/Utilities

    • If you run your day care at home, you will need to determine how much space is used for business and the cost of rent and utilities for that space. View this as an ongoing expense and remember it is tax-deductible.

    Insurance

    • Even a small home day care should have general liability insurance, though most have liability, fire and crime insurance as well.

    Business Costs

    • You may want to hire an accountant or lawyer to help you with technicalities, and you will need to have a quality filing system, desk, computer and printer for different business tasks.

    Toys, Equipment and Furniture

    • Your day care facility will need age-appropriate toys, games, art supplies, swings, sandboxes, balls, child-sized furniture and step stools for the restroom.

    Food

    • The Child and Adult Care Food Program reimburses up to $3 a day of food per person, therefore you should calculate the cost of food for the first few months depending on the number of children attending your facility.

    State Requirements

    • Hidden costs like renovation, improvement of plumbing, or addition of a fence may be required by the state.
