Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program
The National Institute of Food And Agriculture provides grant money for agricultural-based research through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program. This program is available to individuals and institutions who are willing to conduct research about specific subjects.

Eligibility

Individuals are eligible to apply for NIFA competitive grants, as are certain types of institutions, businesses, and organizations. Eligible institutions include land-grant universities, other state-controlled institutions of higher education, private colleges and universities, and state agricultural experiment stations. Small businesses are eligible to apply, as are other for-profit organizations. Native American tribal organizations are also eligible.
General Research Areas

AFRI Grants may be used to support research in the following areas: the production of plant products and plant health, the production of animal products and animal health, food safety and nutrition, renewable energy, natural resources, agriculture systems and technology, and the connection between agriculture economics and rural communities.

Specific Challenge Areas

NIFA Competitive Grants may also be used to conduct research in any of the following specific challenge research areas: childhood obesity prevention, climate change, food safety, global food security, and sustainable bioenergy.
Award Amounts

AFRI Competitive Grants may be awarded in amounts of up to $40,000,000. The estimated total funding for fiscal year 2010 is $262,000,000.
Application Cycle

Applications are accepted from March 22 to July 14. Interested parties should visit the United States Department of Agriculture to submit an electronic application.
