LED Christmas Light Problems

Because LED, or light-emitting diode, lights use less energy, last longer, emit more light and give off less heat, they have quickly gained popularity in the Christmas light market. Aside from their positive attributes, however, LEDs have a unique set of problems.

Cost Considerations

Since LED Christmas lights are a relatively new novelty and have a higher production cost, these types of lights cost more than the traditional incandescent strings.

Varying Cost Due to Color

You may be surprised when perusing the Christmas lights to discover that certain colors of LED lights cost more than others. This is because manufacturers must use a range of semi-conductor materials to create certain colors, thus increasing production costs.

Misconceptions

Although LEDs are lauded for their increased lifespan, some low-quality or expensive to produce LED light colors, such as blue, fail far faster than predicted.

Warning

LED lights have steel or iron leads that are prone to rust if exposed to moisture, a particular problem for lights strung outdoors in winter weather.

LED Historical Problems

Some LED Christmas light problems have already been solved; for example, originally LEDs came in limited colors and were dimmer, and LED specialty lights, such as net lights or blinking lights, were difficult to find. However, current LEDs are just as bright as incandescent and are available in a range of types.
