Locksmithing courses in British Columbia are usually offered by the Professional Locksmith College of BC. The courses follow guidelines established by the BC Association of Professional Locksmiths.

  1. Course Length, Cost and Frequency

    • Courses last for a week and cost around $1,500 Cdn. The course locations vary from city to city. They are offered across the country but at a different location each time. There are about four locksmithing courses offered in British Columbia each year.

    Course Topics

    • The program covers a range of topics, including basic locksmithing, theory of locks, installation, panic hardware and much more.

    Extra Costs

    • Basic locksmithing tools are provided but the student will have to pay a registration and exam fee.

    Duties of a Locksmith

    • The Professional Locksmith College of BC states the duties of a locksmith to be: "Locksmiths install, adjust and repair locks, make keys and change lock combinations."

    Types of Locksmiths

    • Locksmiths are needed at residences, in the automotive industry and in commercial capacities. There are mobile locksmiths, shop locksmiths and safe and vault technicians.

    Employment

    • There is currently a demand for trained locksmiths in BC. Locksmiths make between $12 and $25 an hour and can be self-employed or work for an employer.
