Between CNET News calling it “the fastest gaming laptop ever” and Laptop Magazine, ComputerShopper.com and PC Magazine each granting it an Editor’s Choice award, it seems that, as of 2010, Alienware’s M17x has lived up to its claim of being the most powerful laptop in the universe.
The Intel Core i7 920XM is not only the fastest CPU the M17x can run, but as of 2010 it is the fastest laptop processor on the market, according to Gizmag. It features four cores, 8 MB of cache, and a top speed of 3.2 GHz.
According to Notebookcheck, the dual ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 graphics card solution offers the best performance in the M17x, outperforming the other leading card, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 280M, in a side-by-side comparison.
The M17x can support a maximum of 8 GB of DDR3 RAM. As of 2010, DDR3 is the fastest type of RAM available. Additionally, it consumes less power than its predecessor DDR2.
According to Engadget, the M17x sometimes suffers from stuttering audio, a problem Dell (Alienware’s parent company) promises to fix.
As of 2010, M17x systems start at $1,799. However, machines containing the fastest processor, high-performance video cards, and the maximum amount of memory easily exceed $4,500.
