Hog Hunting in Kansas

Hog Hunting in Kansas thumbnail
Hog hunting is banned in Kansas.

In 1995, Kansas passed a law making it illegal for any resident to be in possession of or to release wild hogs within state limits. The state implemented the law with the cooperation of federal authorities to eradicate the feral hog population. The efforts have greatly reduced the Kansas feral hog population and saved money in property damages.

  1. Hunting

    • While hunting feral hogs is not legal, landowners and tenants may kill the animals or they can obtain a state-issued permit allowing them to hire a company to kill hogs.

    History

    • The Kansas feral hog population grew rapidly and destroyed crops and pasture land. Some hogs were carriers of disease that infected domesticated livestock.

    Hunters

    • While it might seem that allowing hunters to harvest hogs would be a viable solution, hunters releasing feral hogs into the environment was part of the growing problem.

    Cost

    • The first three years of the eradication efforts cost the state $450,000.

    Reproduction

    • Sow can produce two litters a year. Each litter may contain four to six piglets.
