Diapers Vs. Underpads
Parents with toddlers and little children have the choice of using diapers or a waterproof underpad to protect a baby's mattress. Opinions differ on which is better.
-
Diapers
-
Some parents prefer to use diapers because they are more comfortable for the child. Diapers absorb moisture quite effectively so the child continues sleeping even after passing urine. Diapers can be conveniently changed and easily disposed, and do not soil the child's clothes or bedding.
Underpads
-
Underpads may be more comfortable, particularly with older children who do not like wearing bulky diapers at night. However, with underpads, the child will probably wake up or have disturbed and uncomfortable sleep after wetting or soiling the bed. Underpads are messier and require more cleanup than diapers.

Toilet Training
-
Underpads may be more effective for nighttime toilet training because the child will be conscious of having passed urine. With diapers, a child is not as aware that anything has happened and may take longer to get trained.
Expert Opinion
-
For toilet training, the Mayo Clinic advises using an underpad along with training pants, rather than diapers.
Diapers vs. Underpads
-
While diapers are ideal for young children, underpads may be the solution for older children who may have only the occasional "accident."
