Differential Diagnosis of Fatigue and Allergies

Symptoms of fatigue and allergies often may be confused; seek medical attention for accurate diagnosis.

Although they sometimes can exhibit similar symptoms, allergies and fatigue are two very different ailments. Misdiagnosis can culminate in untreated or worsening symptoms, or even death in severe cases.

Symptoms of Allergies

Allergy symptoms include rash, fever, cough, headache, abdominal pain, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, pain or changes in vision. Severe allergies can produce hives or inflammation. Often, symptoms of mild allergies may be mistaken for those of the common cold.

Cause of Allergies

Allergies occur when the body's white blood cells and other defenses attack substances introduced into the bloodstream or by other contact with the body, the Auckland Allergy Clinic explains.

Symptoms of Fatigue

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute lists fatigue symptoms as shortness of breath, dizziness (particularly when standing), frequent headache, chest pain and weariness. Patients also may experience poor appetite, listlessness and sleep deprivation.

Cause of Fatigue

Some fatigue is caused by lack of sleep, or lack of quality sleep. It also can be caused by anemia, B12 vitamin deficiency, hypothyroidism, undiagnosed urinary tract infection, caffeine overload, sleep apnea or undiagnosed heart disease.
