Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) includes a large range of symptoms that disturb a woman's normal functioning in the hours or days prior to her monthly menstrual cycle, according to the University of Virginia's Gynecological Health Department.

  1. Fluid Retention

    • One of the symptoms of PMS is fluid retention, according to UT Southwestern's health library. Oliguria, or decreased formation of urine, causes such retention.

    Weight Gain

    • The Mayo Clinic explains that urinary retention from PMS can result in weight gain and tenderness that accompanies bloating. Rapid weight gain can be detrimental to cardiovascular health.

    Vitamins

    • A deficiency of vitamin B6 is widely believed to be a contributing factor to PMS, according to the University of Virginia's Gynecological Health Department. However, according to Penn State's University Health Services, tests have shown increased doses of B6 simply leave the body through the urine and have no effect on PMS.

    Treatment

    • A diuretic can be helpful in relieving fluid retention in women with PMS, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Diuretics are available over-the-counter or by prescription. Many women find that discomfort from urinary symptoms accompanying PMS can be relieved with lifestyle changes, vitamins, education and medications.

    Seeking Help

    • If lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications have not relieved the symptoms of PMS and the symptoms are affecting your daily life, the Mayo Clinic recommends consultation with a physician.
