The Definition of Security Threat

A security threat is any incident or confrontation that jeopardizes security, which, defined by the Collins English Dictionary, is “precautions taken to ensure against theft, espionage, etc.” The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is the United States’ program against security threats.

Terrorism

Terrorism is a form of guerrilla warfare designed to inflict confusion, disruption and fear. As of 2010, Homeland Security under President Barack Obama’s administration plans to provide $5 billion in assistance to battle global terrorism.

Biological

The use of improvised biological weapons is another type of security threat. To combat biological warfare as well as epidemics, the United States plans to utilize international resources to quickly and efficiently create new drugs, vaccines and diagnostic tests.

Nuclear

Nuclear weapons have been a threat to national and global security since their creation during World War II. Protecting nuclear material stockpiles against theft or intrusion is one way to help prevent nuclear war.

Cyberspace

As the U.S. becomes more integrated through network systems, it becomes more vulnerable to cyber terrorism, a form of network terrorism aimed at targeting infrastructure such as financial institutions and power facilities.

Transportation

Transportation security is also important for preventing other forms of security threats. Protecting shipments of good and services on the ground and in the air can help prevent drugs, weapons and people from sneaking into the country.
