The term marcasite sterling is used to describe jewelry that is made of sterling silver and set with iron pyrite.

Origins

Marcasite is a metallic-looking iron sulfite mineral related to iron pyrite. In the past, the terms were used interchangeably, as they are similar. Both polish to a silvery gleam, but pyrite is less fragile and better suited to making jewelry.

HIstory

Although pyrite (marcasite) has been used in jewelry for centuries, it became popular as a substitute for diamonds in the 18th century, particularly in Switzerland, where the use of diamonds was restricted by law.

Popularity

Sterling silver set with pyrites was popular in the Victorian era for elaborate mourning jewelry. The glittering, silvery pyrite made a striking contrast with the black of polished jet. It also was used extensively in art nouveau and art deco designs.

Manufacture

Individual pieces of pyrite can be set in sterling jewelry with traditional prongs, but in less expensive pieces the stones are frequently glued in place.

Care and Cleaning

Because pyrite can be damaged by water or exposure to high humidity, it is best to keep your marcasite sterling silver rings and pins in a jewelry box when they are not in use. If they must be cleaned, wipe them with a damp cloth and dry them thoroughly.
