What Is the Difference in L-Lysine & L-Tyrosine?

L-lysine and L-tyrosine are amino acids with distinctly different functions in the body. Primarily, lysine boosts the immune system while tyrosine affects mental health and hormone levels.

  1. Lysine and Herpes

    • Even stubbornly persistent herpes viruses often respond to lysine, reducing the pain and suffering that accompanies cold sores, shingles or genital herpes.

    Tissue and Bones

    • Lysine helps rebuild and repair tissue after injury or surgery, and it helps stave off osteoporosis by assisting with the uptake of calcium.

    Tyrosine and Hormones

    • Tyrosine is the building block of dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for a person’s ambition and drive, while conversely creating a sense of satisfaction with moderation. This amino acid also increases the body’s supply of adrenaline and thyroid hormones.

    Tyrosine and Appetite

    • More dopamine means less appetite. Not only does tyrosine suppress cravings for sugary foods, but, according to wellness reference manual “Healthy Healing,” it also helps reduce body fat.

    Nonessential versus Essential

    • Tyrosine is regarded as a nonessential amino acid because the body can make it from other amino acids. Lysine is an essential amino acid, which means it must be supplied from protein in the diet.
