What Is a Hazardous Waste Removal System?

A hazardous waste removal system is a process that gets rid of hazardous waste. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, there are several different methods for eliminating or housing waste. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hazardous Waste

    • According to the EPA, a hazardous waste is any liquid, solid, or gas that is either a discarded commercial product or the by-product of a manufacturing process, and is also harmful to humans and the environment.

    Storage and Transport

    • The first stage in most hazardous waste removal systems is hazardous waste storage and transport. Hazardous waste can also be transported in a variety of different containers, such as tanker trucks, railroad cars, and 55-gallon drums.

    Treatment

    • Once it has been transported to an appropriate facility, one option for the removal of hazardous waste is treatment. The EPA defines hazardous waste treatment as any process that changes the character of a substance and makes it less of a threat. The most common method of hazardous waste treatment is incineration.

    Hazardous Waste Disposal

    • Another option for removing hazardous waste is disposal, which the EPA defines as permanently storing hazardous waste in the ground. Common containers for hazardous waste disposal include landfills, surface impoundments and injection wells.

    Regulation

    • Facilities that are involved in the storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous waste are regulated by the EPA. Because hazardous wastes are potential threats to society and the environment, waste removal facilities are required to keep accurate records and can only operate under permit.
