Receiving training and certification as a mystery shopper is not required; however, companies seeking qualified reputable shoppers tend to take certified shoppers more seriously. Becoming a trained and certified secret shopper requires a few easy steps.

  1. Online Writing Course

    • As a mystery shopper you are required to report your evaluations and findings. Many mystery shopping companies require you to submit writing samples before hiring you as a secret shopper. Take an online writing course or workshop to brush up on your writing abilities (see Resources).

    Silver Certification

    • When you take the Mystery Shoppers Providers Association online silver certification course (see Resources), companies realize you consider what you do a viable career and not just a hobby. For a $15 fee, you receive a short training course and are administered an online test, upon completion of which you receive the first-level certification as a mystery shopper.

    Gold Certification

    • You must successfully complete the Mystery Shopping Providers Association's silver certification process before applying for gold certification. For a fee of $125, you can attend a Gold Certification Workshop in a designated city.

    Gold Certification DVD

    • You have the option to purchase a gold certification DVD if traveling to another city is not convenient for you. For a fee of $99 and a $5 shipping fee, a gold certification DVD will be mailed to you by the Mystery Shopping Providers Association to complete at your own pace and receive your certificate.

    Get to Work

    • Sign up with reputable companies through the MSPA. You are not required to pay to begin shopping for any company except for reimbursable expenses such as purchases in a company's establishment. To begin, search open shop assignments posted on the MSPA website.
