Team Building Leadership & Ethics

Building ethical teams is a leader's responsiblity.

Leadership is very important for success in the business world. An effective leader must encourage team building among his employees, as well as ethical standards.

  1. Importance of Team Building

    • Leaders are important in the workplace, but employees also want to feel that management values their opinions as well, and will make use of their expertise. In other words, people want to be treated as adults who are good at their jobs and work with other similarly skilled employees. This is why team building is so important, because it engages workers and empowers workers: They are not just mindless drones following orders.

    Role of a Leader

    • Teamwork still requires leadership. A leader helps to set the tone and arbitrate conflicts while intelligent adults use their abilities and share responsibilities to tackle large projects. A leader sends the signal from the top down that people should respect others and listen to their ideas.

    Ethics

    • A leader should lead by example. Therefore, a leader must always act ethically and emphasize his commitment to compliance with his team, so the team will not be tempted to cut corners. Teamwork also prevents secrecy, which can breed unethical behavior.

    Problem Leadership

    • A company may have an ethical policy, but that can quickly become irrelevant if a leader puts profits or other goals ahead of everything else, which encourages his teams to take any steps (even unethical ones) necessary to make the grade.

    Solutions

    • Employees follow a leader's example, so management should not be exempt from ethics training and compliance. Leaders themselves should always encourage employees to work together and teams to do the right thing.
