Information on U.S. Postal Stamps

Postal stamps began as prepaid cards and stamps from individual cities.

U.S. postal stamps are a popular addition to any stamp collection. While value depends on the individual stamp, there are literally thousands of designs to add to your collection.

History

The United States did not start issuing uniform stamps until 1847, even though rates were established in 1845. Prior to this time, individual cities created their own stamps and prepaid envelopes; a blue Alexandria provisional stamp sold for $1,000,000 in 1981.

Traditional Stamps

There are hundreds of thousands of stamp designs, which all bear the postage rate reflected at the time of creation. For collectors, stamp values vary depending on the scarcity and condition of the stamp.

First Day of Issue

When a new stamp is issued, a ceremony takes place. You can mail a self-addressed stamped envelope to receive a canceled copy of the stamp that reads "First Day of Issue." Some of these stamps can fetch high prices.

Personalized Stamps

Personalized stamps are not as popular among collectors, but anyone can create stamps from their own photos online. The prices are slightly above the First-Class postage rate.

Forever Stamps

Forever Stamps became available on April 12, 2007. This stamp allows the buyer to use the same stamps even if postal rates increase. They have gained in popularity as stamp prices have begun to increase almost yearly.
