Tamoxifen is an antiestrogen medication prescribed to treat breast cancer tumors that feed on estrogen. It can slow the cancer's spread into other body regions or reduce the chance of breast cancer for patients in high risk groups. The drug is generally safe, although there are side effects and risks associated with it that must be monitored closely.

  1. Precautions

    • Inform your doctor if you are taking the medications Arimidex, Cytoxan, Femara, or Depo-Provera as they may have side effects with Tamoxifen. Consult your doctor if you are currently pregnant or are planning to conceive soon. Tamoxifen cannot be taken during pregnancy because it can harm the fetus.

    Tamoxifen and Antidepressants

    • Medco Health Solutions, Inc. presented a study in spring 2009 that showed a higher cancer recurrence rate among women taking certain antidepressants along with tamoxifen. Patients taking Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft showed a two times higher recurrence rate than those taking only tamoxifen. But women taking Clexa, Luvox, and Lexapro showed a lower recurrence rate near that of the tamoxifen only patients.

    Side Effects

    • Mild to moderate side effects of tamoxifen include tumor site pain, hot flashes, nausea, depression, and fatigue. Call your doctor if those symptoms persist or intensify.

    Overdose

    • According to MedlinePlus, overdose symptoms include uncontrollable shaking, unsteadiness, or collapse. Call poison control or 911 immediately if overdose is suspected.

    Warnings

    • Tamoxifen may cause uterine cancer, stroke, or pulmonary blood clots. Keep all doctor's appointments during tamoxifen treatment.
