Why Get a Blower Fan With a Wood Fireplace?
On a cold night, nothing seems quite as cheery as a warm fire crackling in the fireplace. The only problem is that very little of the heat generated by that fire actually makes it into the room. A blower system could change that. Does this Spark an idea?
-
What Blowers Do
-
Wood fireplace blowers distribute warm air deeper into a room and can also deliver warm air to other rooms in the house.
How They Work
-
The blower system pulls in colder air from living spaces and circulates it around the firebox, which warms the air before the blower sends it back out into the room.
-
Types
-
Blower units can be built in when the fireplace is constructed, set up in front of the fireplace or they can be included in specially designed fireplace grates.
Efficiencies
-
A typical fireplace is only about 5 to 10 percent efficient, and most of the heat escapes up through the chimney. By capturing and distributing some of this warm air, a blower system can increase fireplace efficiencies to 70 percent or more.
Concerns
-
Both the fan and the circulation of air through the system can create a great deal of noise. Blowers run on electricity and may not be counted on to deliver heat during power outages.
