Wood fireplace.

On a cold night, nothing seems quite as cheery as a warm fire crackling in the fireplace. The only problem is that very little of the heat generated by that fire actually makes it into the room. A blower system could change that. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What Blowers Do

    • Wood fireplace blowers distribute warm air deeper into a room and can also deliver warm air to other rooms in the house.

    How They Work

    • The blower system pulls in colder air from living spaces and circulates it around the firebox, which warms the air before the blower sends it back out into the room.

    Types

    • Blower units can be built in when the fireplace is constructed, set up in front of the fireplace or they can be included in specially designed fireplace grates.

    Efficiencies

    • A typical fireplace is only about 5 to 10 percent efficient, and most of the heat escapes up through the chimney. By capturing and distributing some of this warm air, a blower system can increase fireplace efficiencies to 70 percent or more.

    Concerns

    • Both the fan and the circulation of air through the system can create a great deal of noise. Blowers run on electricity and may not be counted on to deliver heat during power outages.
