Facts on Baby Koi Fish

Baby Koi fish are an excellent addition to any pond. They were developed through selective breeding of various carps in Japan. They are hardy fish that can survive for many years.

Size

Baby Koi fish can be as small as three inches. They will grow to a length between one and two feet.

Diet

Earthworms are ideal food for baby Koi fish.

Baby Koi fish are omnivores, so they eat both meat and plants. Earthworms, lettuce, bread and fruits are ideal food for baby Koi fish.

Behavior

Baby Koi are non-aggressive around other fish. They eat quickly, however. Be sure to limit the amount of food available to the Koi because they don't know when to stop eating.

Color

Some baby Koi fish species may not exhibit the colorful scales of older Koi. It may take a year for the colorful patterns to show. Possible colors include silver, red, blue, yellow, orange, brown and black.

Lifespan

Koi fish have an expected lifespan of 30 years. The oldest recorded Koi fish was 233 years old.
