What Is Merino Sheepskin? thumbnail
Merino sheepskin comes from merino sheep.

There are plenty of Merino sheepskin products out on the market now; boots, seat covers, blankets and even children's toys are examples of items made from this material. Not all manufacturers explain what merino sheepskin is exactly, though. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Spanish Origins

    • Merino sheepskin is sometimes called Spanish lambskin because the merino sheep breed is from Spain.

    Exporting

    • Merino sheepskin is a big export for Australia.

    Temperature Control

    • Due to the dense fibers of sheepskin, which promote air circulation and insulation, sheepskin used in clothing and footwear can keep your body from getting too cold or warm.

    Healing Properties

    • By increasing blood circulation and killing bacteria, the large amounts of lanolin (a natural skin oil) in sheepskin aid your body in healing itself.

    Material

    • The non-fibrous side of sheepskin is like suede, and both sides of the material are very soft to the touch. The material has very low friction against your body and does not usually cause sores.
