Difference Between Organic Sugar & White Sugar
Organic sugar is cultivated from sugar cane or sugar beets not treated with pesticides. It is manufactured with minimal additives. Manufacturers use chemicals to bleach the color and filter out impurities when processing refined or "white" sugar. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Appearance
-
Organic sugar has an amber appearance because the naturally occurring molasses remains during processing. The refined sugar manufacturing process uses chemicals to remove impurities. Brown sugar is not organic. It is refined white sugar with molasses added.
Organic Processing
-
Manufacturers extract the juice from the plant, add lime to help clarify the mixture and allow it to dry into organic crystals, according to Green Living Tips.
-
Refined Processing
-
To produce refined sugar, manufacturers add chemicals such as phosphoric acid, sulfur dioxide and formic acid to bleach and filter the product, according to Natural Organic Lifestyle.
Environment
-
Refined sugar has a greater environmental impact because of pesticides that may be applied to non-organic plants, chemicals added in manufacturing and the additional processing required to bleach and purify the product.
Health
-
Organic sugar does not contain harmful chemicals. Instead, it retains trace amounts of minerals, including phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.
