Some people may need to see a dermatologist for pimples.

Everyone wants smooth, clear, acne free skin. Unfortunately, most of us suffer from frequent or occasional acne breakouts. Getting rid of pimples can be as easy as using home acne treatments, though some people may need to see a dermatologist for care. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Causes

    • The American Academy of Dermatology identifies four main causes for acne breakouts: bacteria, clogged pores, inflammation and oil. Extra oil gets trapped beneath the skin's surface, clogging pores; P. acnes, a bacteria, thrives in the clogged pores, causing inflammation.

    Treatment

    • Getting acne free skin means using a topical treatment that you apply to the area where acne breakouts occur, using systemic treatment that you take orally, combining systemic and topical treatments, or in severe cases, undergoing laser treatments. Topical treatments for acne breakouts include retinoids, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide; antibiotics like erythromycin and tetracycline are common systemic treatments for acne breakouts.

    Prevention

    • Prevent pimples by regularly and gently cleansing your skin to remove excess oil; the American Academy of Dermatology warns against washing your face too often or scrubbing it, since this will make your acne worse. If you wear makeup, you may also be able to avoid or reduce acne breakouts by using oil-free, noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic cosmetics.

    Time Frame

    • Getting rid of pimples can a month or two, depending on the severity of acne breakouts. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that there's no such thing as an overnight cure for pimples, and that treatment is an ongoing process that works by preventing new acne breakouts not healing zits that already exist.

    Misconceptions

    • Many people believe that eating greasy foods or chocolate can cause acne breakouts, but according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there is no link between zits and food. Enjoy your chocolate: it won't prevent you from enjoying acne free skin!
