Pristiq Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

Pristiq Treatment of Bipolar Disorder thumbnail
Managing bipolar disorder is a balancing act.

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that causes depression and periods of an abnormally elevated or irritable mood known as mania. Medication for bipolar disorder typically includes a mood stabilizer and an antidepressant. Pristiq is one antidepressant prescribed for bipolar disorder.

  1. What is Pristiq?

    • Pristiq is an antidepressant medication that increases the amount of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Low levels of these neurotransmitters have been associated with depression.

    The Balancing Act

    • Bipolar disorder is not effectively treated with an antidepressant alone since an antidepressant can cause a manic episode. A mood stabilizing medication is used to guard against mania. Pristiq may not alleviate the symptoms of depression if the dose is too small.

    Finding the Right Dose

    • The psychiatrist often starts by prescribing a low dose of Pristiq or other antidepressant. The dose may be increased if the patient is still experiencing depression. A lower dose may be necessary if the patient develops manic symptoms.

    Side Effects

    • Possible side effects of Pristiq include nausea, dizziness, decreased appetite, sweating, and constipation.

Other Components of Bipolar Disorder Treatment

    • Psychotherapy, often in the form of cognitive-behavioral therapy, is used to help the person with bipolar disorder manage the symptoms and change thought processes and behaviors that exasperate the condition.
