What Is a DVI Connector?

The white terminal on the far side of this graphics interface is known as a DVI output. This is what all DVI cables connect to.

There are many kinds of DVI connectors, and all of them follow specific standards established by Digital Display Working Group. DVI offers a much more powerful solution than VGA, its predecessor.

Definition

DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface. DVI connectors are used to establish a link between any video transmitting device and a display.

Types

DVI connectors are very diverse but also, to some degree, uniform. There are single link and dual link versions for both digital and integrated (analog and digital) DVI connectors.

Difference Between Single Link and Dual Link

Single link DVI connectors possess a limit of up to 165 MHz clock speed and only send one stream of images. Dual link DVI connectors are limited to the quality of the cable and send two streams per image for faster drawing.

What Devices Use DVI?

Since DVI was implemented in 1999, many devices have started to use this interface to deliver high quality images. Some examples are modern computers, DVD players, and high definition TV sets (HDTVs).

Compatibility

Virtually any DVI cable fits in any DVI output. It does not matter if the cable lacks some pins. All DVI outputs are made with the same specifications, unlike DVI cables.
