Information on Salicylic Acid Shampoo
Salicylic acid shampoo is commonly used to treat the medical conditions that cause dandruff from the scalp. If you suffer from a serious case of dandruff, and over-the-counter products have not been able to treat the problem, consider asking your doctor about salicylic acid shampoo.
-
Function
-
Salicylic acid shampoo is used to relieve itching, flaking, irritation, scaling and redness of the scalp. These symptoms are commonly caused by psoriasis or seborrhea, although your doctor may prescribe salicylic acid shampoo to treat other medical conditions as well.
Directions
-
To use salicylic acid shampoo, wet the hair thoroughly and apply the shampoo to your scalp. Use your fingers to massage the shampoo into the scalp, then rinse completely. When the hair and scalp are washed with salicylic acid shampoo, the salicylic acid causes the skin to swell slightly, then soften and peel in the areas where it was applied.

Side Effects
-
Salicylic acid shampoo may cause the skin to become dry, red, irritated or scaly. If any severe side effects or allergic reactions occur after using salicylic acid shampoo, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.
Considerations
-
You should not use salicylic acid shampoo if you have any of the following medical conditions: pregnancy, liver or kidney problems, skin infections, diabetes or poor blood circulation. You should also avoid using the shampoo if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the salicylic acid shampoo.
Complications
-
You should not use salicylic acid shampoo if you are taking certain medications, as the salicylic acid may interfere with their effectiveness and safety. These medications include anticoagulants, aspirin, methotrexate and sulfonylureas.
