Solid Wood Vs. Engineered Wood Floor

Hardwood floors add value to a home

The beauty of hardwood floors appeals to many homeowners, but the idea of caring for them is not quite as attractive. In these scenarios, an engineered wood floor can make a great alternative. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Engineered flooring is built with a thin, top layer of real wood that covers a bottom layer of plywood. Solid wood floors, on the other hand, are made of nothing but the material of wood selected.

    Considerations

    • Although there is no difference in sight to an observer, engineered flooring does require less wood since the bottom layer is a different material, and is thus considered a more environmentally friendly product.

    Durability

    • Engineered wood will be just as tough as genuine hardwood flooring, and also proves more resistant to moisture, which may cause wood to warp or split.

    Maintenance

    • Because of the thin top layer with engineered flooring, it is not always possible to sand out any dents or scratches, while solid hardwood floors do not have that risk.

    Cost

    • Prices are very similar for both kinds of floor types, so homeowners looking to save more money will not get an advantage with either type. As of 2009, prices range from $8 to $10 per square foot on average.
