All dogs can benefit from probiotics and natural enzymes.

Many dog food companies have started adding probiotics and other natural enzymes to their recipes. Probiotics are bacteria and yeast that are beneficial to the body. Both probiotics and natural enzymes aid the digestive system.

  1. Types

    • The most common types of probiotics are lactic acid bacteria like L. acidophilus and L. bulgaricus. Types of natural enzymes include protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase.

    Function

    • Both probiotics and natural enzymes help restore the normal balance of microflora, or good bacteria in the digestive system, to help prevent a range of health problems in dogs and aid the digestive process.

    Uses

    • Probiotics and natural enzymes commonly treat intestinal upset such as diarrhea, vomiting, gas and bloating. They also can help treat arthritis, yeast infections, chronic constipation, asthma, food allergies and skin irritations in dogs.

    Benefits

    • Anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties are benefits of probiotics and natural enzymes. They also produce vitamin B, folic acid and biotin and stimulate the immune system.

    When to Administer

    • Probiotics and natural enzymes may be administered at any time but are especially helpful for puppies and dogs who have recently undergone antibiotic treatment, with digestive disorders, with allergies and skin problems and dogs prone to high levels of stress.
