Define a Business Charter

A business charter is required for the formation of corporations, a prevalent type of business entity in the United States and Europe. Corporations are often large companies owned in part or in whole by a group of shareholders, they can be either public or private.

  1. Purpose

    • A business charter is the "face" a corporation shows to local and national government officials. Potential owners must file a business charter before they found a corporation.

    Components

    • A corporate charter is comprised of two sets of documents: articles of incorporation and a certificate of incorporation. The business charter is formed when both of the components are approved and enacted.

    Contents

    • A business charter is the foundation of business, describing its core mission, strategy and organizational structure. The contents of a business charter can be changed, but only with approval from government officials.

    Government Review

    • Each state and nation has its own laws regulating the responsibilities and requirements for corporate business charters. Government officials review the components of a business charter multiple times before approving or rejecting the document.

    Requirements

    • Depending on varying local regulations, a corporation may be required to demonstrate the reliability of its management personnel, offer to improve the community or prove its ability to meet initial financial obligations.
