Wobblers Treatment

Wobbler’s syndrome, or cervical vertebral instability, is a condition that affects large dogs and causes a wobbly gait while walking. Veterinarians may use several methods to treat dogs with this condition.

  1. Identification

    • According to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, younger Great Danes and older Dobermans are the breeds that are most likely to develop Wobbler’s syndrome.

    Symptoms

    • Dogs with Wobbler’s syndrome may have a clumsy gait and take short and choppy steps as they walk. Animals with this condition may hold their heads low because of neck pain and they may have a stiff or arthritic appearance.

    Restrictions

    • A veterinarian may prescribe cage rest and restricted activity for one month for dogs with Wobbler’s syndrome.

    Medications

    • Veterinarians may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs and pain medications for dogs that suffer from the effects of Wobbler’s syndrome.

    Surgery

    • Dogs that do not improve with other treatment methods may require surgery to treat a ruptured cervical disk or stabilize the vertebral column.
