Information About Clothes Dryers
A clothes dryer is a household appliance that is used to dry clothes or other types of fibers after the clothes have been washed and cleaned. Does this Spark an idea?
-
History
-
M. Pochon of France designed a clothes dryer in 1800 that an operator had to hand-crank. Brooks Stevens, an American, developed the modern mechanical dryer in the 1940s.
Function
-
Most clothes dryers feature a tumbler in which air is heated and circulated. The clothes are rotated at a speed to maintain space between items, allowing for the heat and air to dry the clothes.
-
Types
-
Traditional dryers vent hot air outdoors through a ventilation system, which allows for more dry air to continue the process of drying. There are several types of dryers that don't vent hot air, including spin dryers, condenser dryers, heat pump dryers, and compression and solar dryers.
Warning
-
Typical venting tumble dryers require the operator to occasionally clean out the lint that is removed from the clothing and catches in a trap. Failure can lead to longer drying times for clothes and overheating of the unit.
Considerations
-
Clothes dryers can be quite expensive. A portable clothes dryer can cost less than $250, but other types can exceed $1,000.
