DLP Vs. LCD Televisions

LCD and DLP TVs

DLP and LCD televisions are two of the several formats that comprise the high definition genre. They both offer the highest quality in HD technology for a superior viewing experience.

  1. Resolution

    • Both DLP and LCD televisions feature resolutions of either 720p or 1080p. These numbers refer to the number of lines used to create an image. The more lines, 1080, the higher the screen resolution.

    Contrast Ratio

    • Contrast ratio is the range between white and black that a television can produce. Both DLP and LCD TVs deliver similar ratios with no clear-cut winner between the two.

    Size

    • The similarities between the two products end at size. DLPs are rear-projection televisions that often weigh well in excess of one hundred pounds. They are tall, thick and require a stand. LCDs can be less than 2 inches thick and mounted on a wall.

    Longevity

    • LCD televisions have a lifespan of around 66,000 hours. DLP has a lifespan of around 8,000 hours before you have to change out its internal lamp.

    Availability

    • The popularity of LCD and plasma technology has all but made DLP televisions obsolete. Currently very few manufacturers---other than Mitsubishi---are producing DLP televisions.
