Conflicts occur in the workplace when two or more people are unable to reconcile contrasting views, ideals or opinions. A supervisor may take certain actions to help resolve issues, but may also exercise preemptive measures to prevent conflicts.

  • In order for rules to be followed, they must be set. A supervisor must create and enforce basic rules and procedures governing the work environment to eliminate potential for disagreements or conflicts.

  • Many conflicts in the workplace occur as a result of an employee's dissatisfaction with his position. It is important for a supervisor to regularly review her employee's job description, ensuring that each individual is utilized to the best of his ability.

Training

  • Toward helping foster a conflict-free environment, a supervisor might benefit from providing soft skill training, such as communication and conflict resolution.
