Land management refers to the process of managing the development and use of the nation's land resources. The main goal is to prevent environmental damage to the land and harm to wildlife.

  1. Function

    • Land managers work to conserve and restore rangelands, forests and other natural resources by designing and implementing programs to sustain the land and wildlife.

    Conservation Scientists

    • Conservation scientists manage and protect the nation's natural resources. They work with private landowners and government to design ways to improve the land without harming the environment.

    Foresters

    • Foresters oversee the nation's forests. Their duties include supervising harvests, choosing and preparing sites for planting trees, directing controlled burning and the use of herbicides to clear brush and logging debris, and monitoring seedlings for signs of disease or insect infestation.

    Specializations

    • Both foresters and conservation scientists tend to specialize in one area such as soil conservation, native species, pest management or forest economics.

    Employers

    • Most conservation scientists are employed by federal government agencies such as the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Most foresters are employed by federal, state and local government agencies. A small number of conservation scientists and foresters are employed by non-profit organizations and logging companies.
