Foresters oversee the nation's forests. Their duties include supervising harvests, choosing and preparing sites for planting trees, directing controlled burning and the use of herbicides to clear brush and logging debris, and monitoring seedlings for signs of disease or insect infestation.

Most foresters are employed by federal, state and local government agencies. A small number of conservation scientists and foresters are employed by non-profit organizations and logging companies.
